Years ago, when my kids were little, I remember chasing them around on a playground. I found scaling monkey bars and cargo nets was tough. Games of tag left me gassed. I remember thinking, What a great workout. We need playgrounds for adults.
Until that point, I had a very traditional approach to fitness. Strict, isolated, bodybuilding movements like bench press and bicep curls. That seemed to be what everyone was doing. But experience with kids left me rethinking what fitness is. Since then, we’ve seen the emergence of Crossfit, obstacle racing and even American Ninja Warrior. We’ve grown to appreciate “functional fitness.” We’ve learned the things kids do on a playground aren’t just fun, they’re also an effective workout.
That kind of unconventional approach to fitness has since become my passion. I don’t do traditional gyms and machines. I enjoy nontraditional, functional exercises and challenges: obstacles like monkey bars and peg boards; dynamic bodyweight movements; equipment like med balls, wreck bags, ropes … even the occasional sledgehammer and random rock.
Fitness shouldn’t be a chore. Being active should be something you enjoy and look forward to. I’ll help you get there.
